Services are available only for selected cases in areas such as:   Discrimination in employment: -  Employment discrimination or other adverse employment actions against survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking -  Refusal of employer to provide leave to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking -  Change in terms of employment based on status as a parent or caregiver -  Change in terms of employment based on pregnancy -  Employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity/expression   Discrimination in schools, including athletic equity and schools' mishandling of sexual harassment or sexual assault.   Family law: -  Discrimination against DV survivors by CPS: Children removed from a parent's care based on allegations that the parent failed to protect children from domestic violence by the other parent -  Refusal of court to order abuser to surrender weapons in a DV Protection Order case or appeals filed by an abuser ordered to surrender weapons -  Abusive litigation against survivors of domestic violence -  Alleged father seeks parental rights for a child conceived as a result of sexual assault -  Parental rights terminated due to parent's incarceration   Nonconsensual pornography AKA "revenge porn": Cases in which private, intimate images of a person are distributed without her or his consent   Anti-LGBTQ discrimination, such as: -  Unfavorable treatment of LGBTQ parents in family law cases -  Denial of insurance coverage for transgender persons  Denial of access to health care, including: -  Reproductive health care, including abortion, contraception, or emergency contraception -  Health care for LGBTQ patients -  Health care or other services for incarcerated women

Works in committee to claim unpaid wages and improve the situation of workers living and working in King County, Washington.   Organizes public campaigns, submits complaints to Labor & Industries, and refers cases to attorneys.

Advocates for injured workers who need assistance processing a claim with the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.

Operates legal clinics providing free 30 minute consultations with an attorney at multiple locations across King County. As of 9/2024, most clinics are telephonic, but there may be limited in-person availability in Seattle and Kent. Details will be provided to clients during intake screening. Chinese Information and Service Center, Asian Bar Association of Washington, and Asian Counseling and Referral Service partner with the King County Bar Association to provide a free legal clinic. Pro bono attorneys work with staff and volunteer interpreters to give consultation and legal advice around family law, immigration law, landlord-tenant disputes, employment law, and other areas. Provides information and referral for job placement and training, respite care, legal assistance, financial assistance, scholarships, seizure/epilepsy information, books and materials. Assists people with epilepsy in employment referrals and consultation regarding employment rights. Provides epilepsy education through in-service trainings, presentations to schools and the community, a member newsletter and seminars.

Provides MEDIATION services only. Does NOT mediate dissolutions (divorce) or child custody matters. Does NOT offer any legal advice. Parties voluntarily negotiate the settlement of their disputes with an impartial third party. The parties decide the outcome of the mediation, rather than a judge or arbitrator. The mediator serves to guide the process, mediators are second- and third-year law students under the supervision of law faculty. Investigates and resolves complaints regarding Seattle's Labor Standard laws, including the Minimum Wage Ordinance, Wage Theft Ordinance, Paid Sick and Safe Time Ordinance, Fair Chance Employment Ordinance, Domestic Workers Ordinance, Commuter Benefits, Hotel Employee Protections, Independent Contractor Protections, and any other laws the city may enact. Enforces Seattle's labor standards ordinances to protect workers and educate employers on their responsibilities.    Minimum Wage Ordinance: In 2024, the minimum wage in the City of Seattle is $19.97 per hour for large employers (501 or more employees worldwide) and $19.97 /hour for small employers (500 or fewer employees worldwide). The ordinance also requires employers to provide written notice to employees at time of hire of change of employment, containing the employer's name, physical address and contact information, pay rate, pay basis, regular pay day and tip policies. The Wage Theft Ordinance creates an administrative process for addressing wage theft complaints but does not replace criminal investigations. It remains a crime to withhold payment of wages and tips owed to employees under Seattle Municipal Code 14/20. PSST can be used for an employee's absence from work due to illness, medical appointments, or critical safety issue, including domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. The ordinance applies to all employers with more than four full-time equivalent employees. All employees are eligible for the new benefit, including full-time, part-time and temporary workers. Increased employment opportunities will reduce recidivism, reduce racial disparities in the criminal justice system and strengthen our community. SMC 14. 25 focuses on improving employee health and safety by protecting employees from violent assault and sexual harassment, protecting hotel employees from injury, improving access to medical care for low income hotel employees, preventing disruptions in the hotel industry and providing enforcement guidelines. Provides free 45-minute to 1-hour appointments with an attorney for advice on civil legal issues such as: consumer, finance/debt, employment, housing, benefits. Appointments are required. Clinics are currently telephonic. Attorneys at the clinic are not able to provide representation.

Provides free civil legal services for youth and young adults between ages 12-24 who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

Services are provided by trained professional mediators who volunteer their time. Services include: - Face-to-face mediation - Conflict coaching for problems - Some simple negotiation over the telephone TYPES OF PROBLEMS THE CENTER WILL HANDLE: - Neighborhood problems (noise, pets, parking, lawn & garden, property line problems and other nuisances) - Landlord-tenant issues (deposits, repairs, damages, eviction prevention due to COVID, etc. ) - Real estate or personal property - Foreclosure mediation - Business consumer problems (faulty merchandise, refunds, exchanges, etc. ) - Employer/employee grievances - School problems involving faculty or administration, students or parents - Family issues such as problems related to divorce and parenting plans - Other domestic problems not involving violence, restraining orders, or other factors that require professional intervention or assistance. TYPES OF PROBLEMS NOT HANDLED: - Any problem requiring legal assistance, such as filing lawsuits, criminal defenses, will preparation, etc. - Issues involving drug/alcohol abuse, domestic violence, abuse to children, or issues where one or more parties fears abuse - Problems where a party cannot speak adequately on their own behalf, although can work with clients who have a case manager.
